I’ve recently become aware of two textbooks that deal with global issues.

Planet Earth 2008 is a *fully-photocopiable* resource that marks the International Year of the Planet Earth. It has been written to raise students’ awareness of the Earth and the consequences of human activity upon it.
The text covers essential Earth science facts and important environmental issues.

2. A colleague, Nina, suggested in her comment The Ravaging Tide: Strange Weather, Future Katrinas, and the Coming Death of America’s Coastal Cities by Mike Tidwell. She said it is challenging but not impossible for advanced students, and she highly recommends it. http://www.simonsays.com/content/book.cfm?tab=1&pid=519448
